Ashraya consists of a dedicated team of onsite staff and volunteers committed to our mission combined with a core group of board members, including two of our co-founders, dispersed around the world.
Our Board

Elizabeth Sholtys, Co-Founder
After growing up in Ithaca, New York, at the age of seventeen she was selected to be one of two American representatives at the Mahindra United World College of India (MUWCI), an International Baccalaureate high school located in Pune, India. During her two years at MUWCI, Elizabeth interned with a variety of local non-profit organizations, most oriented around the issues of child welfare, poverty, and specifically, care for and rights of the so-called “rootless and roofless” street children of Mumbai and Pune. After graduating from MUWCI in 2003, Elizabeth returned to the US to attend Emory University. Toward the end of her freshman year at Emory in 2004, Elizabeth was inspired by her course readings and past volunteer experiences as a student in Pune to found Ashraya. After establishing Ashraya in the US, Elizabeth returned to Pune to initiate the groundwork required for Ashraya to commence operations there. In June 2005, shortly after completing her sophomore year at Emory, opened the doors to Ashraya's first group of street children in Pune. Her work with Ashraya earned her multiple awards, such as the Center for Women’s Unsung Heroine Award, and the Emory Humanitarian Award.

Julia Neaubauer, Co-Founder
Originally from Austria, Julia first traveled to India at age sixteen to attend the Mahindra United World College in Pune. During her two-year tenure at Mahindra College, Julia devoted some of her spare time to social work, taught English to children from nearby villages and volunteered at an orphanage. When Elizabeth Sholtys approached her in 2004 with the idea of founding a home for orphaned street children, Julia didn’t hesitate to join the team and has been on board ever since. Julia considers her work with Ashraya a lifelong commitment to helping street children and their communities of origin. Julia holds a degree in Economics and Political Economy from Princeton University. She spent two years working as a Financial Analyst for the Princeton University Investment Company, where she focused on International Equity and Real Assets investments. Julia left her full-time job at Princeton in July 2009 and moved to Pune to spend time running Ashraya's programs on the ground. Julia founded a branch of Ashraya in Austria and served as the head of Ashraya's fundraising branch in the US for two years. From the organization’s beginning stages, Julia has been heavily involved in fundraising activities as well as publicity efforts. Her work with Ashraya earned her multiple awards, such as the Princeton University International Service Award. Julia was named “Austrian Volunteer of the Year 2006” by the Austrian government and “Woman of the Year 2007” by an Austrian Women’s magazine.
